Regular PSA’s contribute to the prevention and cure of a large number of ills. Public health studies show that regular participation in physical activity programes results in a number of physical and mental health benefits. Used in conjunction with other treatments, PSA’s have a positive impact on rehabilitation, especially in cases of physical disability, cardio-vascular illness, and drug or alcohol addiction.
It is interesting to note that, in terms of mental health, a number of behaviours that are typically associated with adolescence – emotional breakdowns (anxiety, violence, etc.) – are found with equal regularity among vulnerable populations. The impact of these issues is often worsened by the instability of life at certain standards of living, or in post-conflict zones (areas that have been at war over long periods of time).
While physical activity is not an automatic cure for these issues, it can moderate and regulate them. Firstly, as with any playful activity, physical activity triggers a release of feelings and emotions as the participant enounters various interpersonal and physical challenges that (s)he must overcome. Secondly, as creative activities (i.e. when coupled with artistic or expressive movement), movement can foster an awareness of one’s emotions and actions that, with special guidance from a coach or instructor, can result in greater knowledge of one’s emotions – greater knowledge of oneself.
